Tuesday, September 29, 2026 - Lusaka
As communities across Africa grapple with the growing impacts of climate change, water insecurity and environmental degradation, the 2026 Season of Creation offers an important opportunity to reflect on humanity’s relationship with the natural world and our shared responsibility to protect it.
Under the theme “Living Water,” this year’s Season of Creation invites communities of faith, civil society organisations, environmental practitioners and citizens to consider the vital role of water in sustaining life and the urgent need for responsible stewardship of this precious resource.
In this context, CERRA Zambia, the Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ), FENZA, the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR), TAKUZA and the Zambia Association of Sisterhoods (ZAS), with support from the Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM) Ecology and Environment Office, will host a virtual conversation on “Living Water and Africa’s Ecological Future: Unpacking the 2026 Season of Creation.”
The conversation will explore the connections between faith, water stewardship, climate resilience and ecological justice, with particular attention to Africa’s environmental realities. It will also consider how faith communities, civil society and citizens can contribute to protecting water resources, strengthening climate resilience and advancing sustainable approaches to environmental management.
At the heart of the discussion is the recognition that water is more than a natural resource. It is fundamental to human dignity, livelihoods, ecosystems and the wellbeing of present and future generations. Ensuring equitable and sustainable access to water therefore requires not only sound environmental practices, but also a commitment to justice, solidarity and responsible stewardship.
The conversation will feature:
Fr. Rampe Hlobo SJ
Secretary, Justice and Ecology Office (JEO), Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM)
Fr. Daniel Mwamba Mutale SJ, PhD
Executive Director, Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR)
The discussion is open to faith leaders, civil society organisations, young people, educators, researchers, environmental practitioners, policymakers and all persons interested in ecological justice and sustainable development in Africa.
