Public Lecture and CSO Dialogue on Africa’s Debt Crisis: A Governance and Justice Challenge

On Monday, 25 August 2025, the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR), in partnership with the CSO Debt Alliance and with support from GIZ Zambia, will host a timely Public Lecture and CSO Dialogue at the NIPA Conference Centre, Lusaka from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM.

The event will feature a keynote address by Professor Thomas Pogge of Yale University’s Global Justice Programme, renowned philosopher and architect of the AU Model Debt Governance Mechanism. This pioneering framework calls for independent AU-level loan assessments before contracting new debts, ensuring greater transparency, accountability, and alignment with Africa’s development priorities.

The dialogue will bring together a wide range of stakeholders — including academia, civil society, policymakers, and citizens — to reflect on the urgent questions of governance, debt justice, and accountability in Africa. By interrogating the continent’s rising debt crisis as both a governance and justice challenge, the discussion seeks to inspire concrete policy reforms and collective action for a more sustainable and equitable future.
