Honouring a life of service:
JCTR holds memorial for Fr. Alex Muyebe

A tribute...

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2025 - The Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) gathered at its Headquarters in Lusaka to honour and celebrate the life of its late Executive Director, Rev. Fr. Alexander Muyebe, S.J. The memorial brought together staff, Jesuits, friends of the Centre, and partners in an atmosphere of solemn remembrance and heartfelt gratitude for a leader whose commitment to justice and faith left a profound imprint on the institution and the country.

The memorial service was led by Rev. Fr. Andrew Simpasa, S.J., Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Lusaka and Chairperson of the JCTR Board. He was joined by Rev. Dr. Boyd Kapyunga Nyirenda, S.J., the Deputy Director of JCTR, who co-celebrated the Eucharist. Their reflections highlighted Fr. Muyebe’s quiet strength, unwavering dedication to marginalised communities, and deep intellectual engagement with the social mission of the Church. The liturgy, with readings from Wisdom of Solomon 3: 1 - 6 and John 11: 17 - 27, served as a moment for the JCTR family to pray for his eternal rest and to renew their commitment to the work he advanced with conviction.

Following the service, the team visited Fr. Muyebe’s final resting place. The grave, now marked with a newly placed tombstone by the Society of Jesus, stands as a simple but dignified tribute to his life of service. Staff offered prayers, laid a wreath and flowers, and observed a moment of silence in recognition of his leadership, generosity, and pastoral heart. The gesture marked a symbolic recommitment to carrying forward his legacy of justice, compassion, and solidarity with the poor.

The commemoration concluded back at JCTR Headquarters with a shared potluck meal — an activity Fr. Muyebe cherished and encouraged as part of team-building and community life within the institution. Staff brought an array of traditional dishes, creating a warm, familial atmosphere that captured the spirit of unity he consistently fostered. The gathering was both a celebration of his memory and a moment of healing for the JCTR community.

Fr. Alexander Muyebe, S.J., served as Executive Director of JCTR for four years, guiding the Centre with clarity of purpose and a deep commitment to advancing a just Zambian society grounded in faith. His legacy continues to shape JCTR’s work, its ethos, and its vision for transformative social engagement.

As the Centre moves forward, the values he embodied—integrity, service, compassion, and a steadfast pursuit of justice—remain at the heart of its mission. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his life continue to inspire all who work for the common good.
